Clinton and Obama or Obama and Clinton?

There, I said it. It’ll be either Shrillery for prezzi-critter with the “audacity of dopes” for veep, or “mister same as the rest but with a newcomer’s image” for POTUS with “the greatest cattle futures trader of all time” for veep, on the demoncrat ticket for 2008. Either way, the combination will be

Dell and Jobs: Sometimes the vision guy is the guy for the job

Filed under: Apple Inc (AAPL), Dell (DELL), EntrepreneursThe news today that Michael Dell has stepped back into the driver's seat of Dell, Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL) makes me think of that other company that started big, tripped bad and didn't regain its footing until the guy who started it returned to the fold. I'm thinking, of course, of Apple, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAP) (until recently Apple Computer, Inc.). Founder Steve Jobs was forced out in 1985 by John Sculley, and, after a twelve year train wreck of failed products and low stock prices, Jobs returned ready to rock and roll in 1997 (ousting then-CEO Gil Amelio). We all know what Apple went on to become under Job's creative and loving eye. Are good things in store for Dell now that the guy ...

Cramer picks and pans diet names

Tonight on CNBC's MAD MONEY, Jim Cramer talked about diet-plays for betting-to-win off the obesity of America. On weight loss, Cramer said there are ways to profit off the diet fad after the holidays. He wants to get into the weight-loss game before the companies report Q1 results. You can burn calories or cut down calories. There are some that earn major bucks and some to avoid. As far as a health-club play, Cramer likes Lifetime Fitness (NYSE:LTM). He disagrees with a Prudential 'Underweight' rating; here's why he liked it and why it popped after he talked about it.He discussed NutriSystems Inc. (NASDAQ:NTRI) as one that is just as dangerous to own now as it was before it recently got hit. He said they sell direct to the consumer ...

Bush & Bernanke

"The Fed is saying that whatever you're worried about, things are okay. If you're worried about housing, there are signs of stabilization. If you're worried about core inflation, that's improved modestly. The Fed's statement was not of much comfort for...

Since Rollins and Dell were joined at the hip, how can Dell ride to the rescue?

Kevin Rollins, a former Bain & Co. consultant, finally paid the price today for Dell Inc. (NASDAQ:DELL)'s string of disappointing results. I doubt Michael Dell can fix what ails his eponymous company. The reason is that he has been working hand-in-hand with Rollins for years. During their sunnier days, Dell used to brag about how Rollins and Dell shared the CEO office. It's not as if Dell has been out giving away billions of dollars to AIDS patients in Africa. Since Rollins took over as CEO in July 2004, Dell's revenues and profits have risen but its stock has fallen 17%, it has missed quarterly revenue and profit targets and -- most painfully -- Dell has lost its PC market leadership to The Hewlett-Packard Company (NASDAQ:HPQ). Rollins' departure came ...

Head of Wal-Mart’s U.S. Operations denies he is leaving company

Filed under: Rumors, Management, Wal-Mart (WMT), Employees, Target Corp. (TGT)Eduardo Castro-Wright, who was hailed the savior to the U.S. sales for Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s (NYSE:WMT) U.S. operations, denies that he will be leaving the company any time soon. There are rumors that Wright will soon be replaced by Doug McMillon, head of U.S. operations for the Sam's Club division. With the jumpstart that Wright needed in the U.S. since the middle of 2006 not really happening in any measurable way, it's easy to see how this rumor may have been started. John Fleming, head of Wal-Mart's Marketing group and a former Target Corp. (NYSE:TGT) alumnus, is changing the way Wal-Mart buys its goods from suppliers, which caused the rumor about Wright's departure apparently. If there are any further developments to ...

What took you so long Michael Dell

Filed under: Major movement, Bad news, From the boards, Management, Insiders, Industry, Dell (DELL), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Employees Why didn't Michael Dell replace Kevin Rollins six months or a year ago as the chief executive of the company that bears his name? Dell Inc. (Nasdaq:DELL) has been in trouble for a long time. Did you ever think that Hewlett-Packard Co. (Nasdaq:HPQ) would ever gain the lead in the PC market? H-P made better machines. I replaced my Dell desktop with an H-P. It wasn't a tough decision. Shares rose on news of the ouster of Rollins, who got the CEO job in 2004. Bloomberg News points out that ...
