Gelatin is a photographic process in which silver halides in a gelatin coating (emulsion) on paper is exposed to light. The light causes the silver to rapidly tarnish. The tarnish will show as gradients of black, the white is simply areas of the paper that have not been exposed. The latent image is then submerged into a initial developing bath the developed reveals the exposed portions resulting in a visible image. Once the desired exposure is reached, the image is stopped with a second bath and then fixed (made insensitive to light) by a third bath.
